The government-downsizing team estimates that 20 percent of federal websites can be deleted or consolidated.

The so-called Department of Government Efficiency is setting its sights on agency websites it deems obsolete.

The DOGE operation lost its former leader last week as Elon Musk officially stepped back from his role with DOGE. But the administration has signaled plans to keep the DOGE mission going, including a request to expand the operation’s staffing and funding.

Hours after Musk’s farewell press conference Friday, the DOGE account on the social media platform X announced a project to cut costs by deleting government websites.

“Website project!” DOGE posted Friday evening.
