The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court’s ruling that has thwarted layoffs across much of the government.

In its filing with the court, the administration contends that a district court’s nationwide injunction “bars nearly the entire Executive Branch” — including 19 agencies and 11 Cabinet departments — from moving forward with plans to “execute lawful reductions in the size of the federal workforce.”

The request comes after a federal appeals court last week refused a Trump administration attempt to allow layoffs to proceed at federal agencies where the lower court has blocked them.

It covers the Interior, Energy, Agriculture, Commerce and Transportation departments; EPA; the National Science Foundation; and others.
